Low carbon target for KL by 2030

In tandem with the rapid infrastructure and construction activities taking place, a number of climate issues and environmental problems such as flash floods, urban heat build-up, traffic congestion and solid waste management have emerged in our towns and cities that seriously require immediate attention.

The highly populated capital city of Kuala Lumpur, for example, is already affected by those environmental issues. From an estimated 1.8 million people living in KL currently, it is projected that the population will grow to 2.2 million and 2.5 million in 2020 and 2030 respectively.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s (UTM) Faculty of Built Environment associate professor Dr Muhammad Zaly Shah Muhammad Hussein paints a grim picture for the future generation if nothing is done now.

He says they will be faced with not only a tougher environment ahead but also plagued with sustainability issues.

As such, a Kuala Lumpur Low Carbon Society BluePrint (KLLCSB) 2030 is being formulated to ensure that they will be able to enjoy at least the same quality of living standards as the current generation if not better, he adds.
