In August 2007, 30 students from Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from UTM visited UMS, and conducted a landscape design for 6 days at Laweyan in Solo as well as studying cultural landscape of Central Jawa. The workshop was the prelude of collaboration between the two universities. UMS felt an honor to receive UTM, who then we considered our new member in Architecture UMS family till today.
On 18th to 22nd February 2009, 27 students and 4 lecturers from Department of Architecture, UMS visited UTM to conduct an academic visit and a similar design workshop. The academic journey begun in Kuala Lumpur, then to Putrajaya and finally to UTM in Skudai. The journey was like waking up in the morning after having a nice dream, and realizing that it was not only a dream. Cultural relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia has already travelled long history, but new history between UTM and UMS has just begun.
Along with the progress of UMS’s human resources, Department of Architecture of UMS aims is to improve academic atmosphere through a broader perspective. Architectural Field Trip and Workshop became an important experience which is now formally on the list of Curriculum 2009. Some potential collaboration will be taken care of, while emotional and personal relationship with UTM is in a need of formalization phase.
From the visit, UMS students found that the Malaysian architecture is different from Indonesian one. Architecture in Malaysia shows a rapid and consistent development as shown by architecture in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. GDP Architect has shown us how the emerging of idea into a real architecture project. Petronas Twin Tower and Putrajaya show an enormous development as a new national identity, while Dataran Merdeka is still standing gracefully. Petaling Street and Down Town give more life to KL lifestyle. Down to Johor Bahru, we learnt a lot about landscape architecture in a real scale. Singapore is definitely showing another different example of city development. Urban Redevelopment Authority has sophisticatedly transformed the city country in a very cosmopolitan looks along with nice conservation move.
It is an important and strategic event. We were not only amazed with the architectural expression but also enjoyed UTM hospitality. The moment was so touching that we would never forget. All UTM students and staffs are very helpful. Finally, we like to give our special thank to Dr. Ismail Said who made this journey possible.
