Planning for the Real World! First Year UTM Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning Students’ Visit to the Klang Valley
Towards producing high quality town planners who are able to practically and holistically contribute to more sustainable development of the country, apart from having a forward-looking, innovative, world class Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning (B.URP) curriculum, it is highly essential that the B.URP program is designed “for the real world”; and “planning for the real world” begins in the early year of the planning education.
With this in view, the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Built Environment (FAB), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor Bahru continued with the annual field trip of the First Year, Second Semester’s Site Planning and Layout Studio (SBEP1125) on 17-19 March 2016. The field trip was led by the Studio supervisors, Mr. Chau Loon Wai and Dr. Siti Hajar Misnan.
The studio field trip took 36 First Year B.URP students out of the Studio into the real world, to:
- The cosmopolitan Capital City of Kuala Lumpur that included a technical briefing and professional motivation by the Senior Urban Designer Mr. Liew Toh Yean of locally grown, highly successful international urban design and planning practice, APUDG Sdn Bhd;
- The visionary Federal Administrative City of Putrajaya for onsite perception and appreciation of bold, visionary and innovative master planning by local planning talents with technical briefing by Putrajaya Corporation Senior Town Planner, En. Azhar Othman; and
- The award-winning master planning residential project, Bandar Botanic, Klang for onsite technical briefing on good site engineering, neighbourhood planning and layout design ideas and principles by Senior Town Planner, Mr. Chan Kok Huat.

UTM & IIUM Landscape Architecture Research Design Workshop
A collaboration workshop on research design between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and International Islamic University Of Malaysia (IIUM) was held on 7 March 2016 at Seminar Room 3, B03 Faculty Of Built Environment, UTM. The workshop was organized by the Department Of Landscape Architecture, Faculty Of Built Environment UTM. The one day workshop involved 4th year UTM and 3rd year IIUM, Bachelor Of Landscape Architecture students.
The aim of this research design workshop is to share and exchange some knowledge on the process of doing the topical study and strategy to find a good references based on the selected research topics. In addition, through this workshop the UTM students can share their experience in the topical study journey with the IIUM students who are just embarking in this journey.
The workshop was successful and all participants give a good response and commitment to the event. Students are also developing their network among themselves within the short period of time.
Experience of Exchange Students on the Asean International Mobility for Students (AIMS) Programme
The 1st monthly seminar for the 2nd semester 2015/2016 of DURP was held on the 3rd of March 2016 (Thursday) at Lecture Hall B, B04, Faculty of Built Environment (FAB). The seminar was carried out in two (2) parts. The 1st half was a session where students who participated in the AIMS programme at Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU), Japan, shared their experiences. Three students namely, Nurzafirah binti Dan, Anatasia Lee Anak Suring and Beatrice Jenner Anak David Jutin, of the Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning Programme, DURP, FAB related their experiences whilst living and studying at TMU from the 2nd of September 2015 to the 29th January 2016. Amongst the experiences highlighted included the preparation before departing for TMU, background of TMU, courses attended at TMU, field studies at Totoro Forest, Nogawa River, Ota City and Daikanyama, facilities at the hostel, transportation from hostel to TMU and the socialising with students from other countries participating in the programme. A total of 40 students from Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, China, Korea, France, Germany, Brazil, Belgium and Australia participated in the programme. During the programme students were also taken on visits to Yokohama, Kawasaki, Asakusa, Takao Mountain, Osaka, Fukushima and Enoshima-Kamakura. All three students from DURP, FAB felt that studying and socialising with students from different and diverse backgrounds and cultures brought forth happy memories and was a pleasant and unforgettable experience.
The 2nd half of the seminar was the imparting of information regarding the different student outbound programmes, by Madam Siti Rahimah binti Mohd Yusop, from the UTM International Office. Amongst the outbound programmes are the AIMS programme, Summer School, Global Outreach (GOP) and International Invitation (IIP). Students were also informed of the application process for participation in the programmes, costs to participate, costs borne by UTM and the student, and the preparations required of students interested to participate in the programmes.
