Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) team from Landscape Architecture, Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying was announced as the recipient of the Silver Award for Vertical Wall Competition for the university garden category at the Royal Floria Putrajaya 2019. The competition took place at Taman Botani, Putrajaya. The vertical wall garden also known as the green wall or living wall is a method of covering the wall structure with plants to create a vertical garden.
The main theme of Royal Floria Putrajaya 2019 is ‘orchids and bonsai’, and for the vertical garden competition, the theme of Malaysia National Day expressed in the form of mural art has to be incorporated. `The Magnificent of Victory´ is the concept for UTM team which highlights the chronology of Malaysia’s independence and the success story of the country’s achievements. The vertical wall integrated innovation through the sustainable rainwater harvesting system which functions to irrigate the plants and also as a shading element. There were five universities including UTM who participated in the competition namely Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), International Islamic University Malaysia (UIA), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UITM) and University College of Agroscience Malaysia (UCAM).
The UTM team consisted of five fourth-year students of landscape architecture; Muhammad Afiq Harith Bin Zulkhairi, Mohamad Sabar Bin Mustafa, Intan Zulaikha Nazirah Binti Ishak, Rabiatul Hidayah Binti Abdul Rahman and Oscar Chong Yi Bin. The team was led by LAr. Dr Zanariah binti Jasmani, with the assistance from Mr. Mohd Azhari Bin Mohd Amin (technical support).
Royal Floria Putrajaya is open to the public from 31st August until 8th September 2019 from 10 am to 10 pm.
