KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with collaboration between government sector and many other private agencies organised a programme, KLGeoHydro 2019 which was a 2-day event starting from 18 until 19 November 2019 supported by Persatuan Mahasiswa Ukur Tanah UTM (PEMETA) at Hotel Istana. The big event started with welcoming remarks delivered by Prof. Sr Dr. Mohd Razali Mahmud who was the Chairman of KLGeoHydro 2019 from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and the opening of the exhibition was launched by Dato’ Sr Dr. Azhari Mohamed, Director General of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (JUPEM). An important message was conveyed to the audience with the emphasis of the programme’s theme itself, ‘Empowering Marine Knowledge Through Hydrography’. The conference comprised various related topics presented by the 21 guest speakers who came from local and international agencies that came along with exhibition and a session organised by Young Surveyors Network. Closing remark was delivered by Sr Shaharuddin Musa, President of the Association of Authorised Land Surveyors Malaysia (PEJUTA).
A sub-programme was handled by the FIG Young Surveyors Network and PEMETA as rapporteur. The activities included a 3-Minute Talk Competition, Youth Talk and Speed Dating. In total, 9 teams participated in the 3 Minute Talk by undergraduate and postgraduate students from different universities to present their innovative ideas in supporting marine environment, followed by Youth Talk. Youth Talk was an interactive session from young professionals sharing their experience to inspire and encourage participants to be a part of surveying profession, seize opportunities and at the same time contribute back to the society. The last activity was speed dating aimed to build connections made during the conference and learn how to positively influence the future of the network in a changing world between the participants.
After the big event was held successfully, a technical visit to PETRONAS Twin Towers were organised and joined by KLGeoHydro committee, speakers and PEMETA. The trip was firstly introduced by a short talk from the administrator about the Geomatic department and how it functions under PETRONAS. A while after, all committee and speakers were brought to the PETRONAS Twin Towers Sky Bridge and the highest floor of the tower for a sky view.

JOHOR BAHRU, 5 November 2019 – The Asia Young Designer Awards (“AYDA”), organised by the Nippon Paint Malaysia Group in partnership with IJM Land Berhad has successfully announced the winners at the ALoft KL Sentral, Kuala Lumpur. AYDA is a platform that exposes students to experience the challenges in the design boundaries and contextual issues in the architecture and interior design fields. The theme for this year’s AYDA is “Forward: A Sustainable Future”, which challenges the next generation of architects and interior designers to break the boundaries of current design concepts by immersing their creations with functional and social sustainability elements in an effort to connect with the community. The Asia regional competition has received 1,230 submissions from 45 universities. The competition is open to IPTA and IPTSs including major architecture schools such as UM, USM, UKM, UCSI, Taylors University, City University of Malaysia and others.

Out of twelve (12) shortlisted finalists for the architecture category, four (4) finalists were from UTM. Three entries were received from UTM MSc Architecture students and one entry was received from a student taking the BSc Architecture course. Ngew Kah Seng, our M.Arch student mentored by Ar. Chan Wai Lai, has won Silver Award and Best Colour Choice while Muhammad Ade Rezky and Muhammad Arib Affan Bin Mohd Hamzan who were mentored by Dr. Leng Pau Chung and Assoc. Prof Dr Raja Nafida binti Raja Shaminan respectively have won an Honorary Mention. On top of that, Lo Wei Meng who was mentored by Dr. Sharifah Salwa Syed Mahdzar won the 5th place for the AYDA 2019 finalist.

With the title named “Theatre of Play”, Ngew Kah Seng has won a RM3,000 cash prize for Silver Award and RM1,000 for the Best Colour Choice award. The submission entry by Ngew is based on his M.Arch Pre-Thesis 2 (Urbanism) studio work located at the Georgetown buffer zone. Muhammad Ade Rezky’s work is based on his M.Arch Final Thesis work entitled “The Fin Seafood Centre as a Third Place” located at Georgetown, Penang while Muhammad Arib Affan Bin Mohd Hamzan has submitted his work named “Torus Growth Centre”. Both Honorary Mention winners have won the RM1,500 cash prize each. Our finalist, Lo Wei Meng who also won a RM200 Cash Prize has submitted his M.Arch Pre-Thesis 2 (Urbanism) studio work named “Pontian Community Transit Hub”.

AYDA 2019, now in its 12th year has grown to be a prestigious platform supported by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE), Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association Youth Malaysia (REHDA Youth), Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC), Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) and the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID).
Throughout the years, UTM never fails to participate and support the AYDA programme that acts as a platform for UTM students to showcase their talents and notable efforts that translates into making positive contributions and ideas to the society and development of country in architecture perspective.

Since 2015 Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying has organised interview session for Real Estate students’ and the number of companies interested to join this yearly event has steadily increased. A total of 12 property companies participated in students’ interview programme organised by the Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying, UTM. This programme was aimed to give prospect for UTM Real Estate students to get hired by real estate companies as well as to increase the employment rate. The session was held on 12th December 2019 under the supervision of Undergraduate Coordinator for Property Course, Dr. Shazmin Shareena Ab. Azis. Forty students from Bachelor of Science (Property Management) and Bachelor of Science (Land Administration and Development) participated in the interview session. The companies were from the various fields in real estate namely property management, valuation, building management and estate agency. This included major players in the industry such as CBRE|WTW, Knight Frank Property Consultant, Kensington Strata Management, HSR Property Consultant, Guardian FM, PPC International, Dualtap Building Management, Hartasama Property, Shapadu Property, Straqta Property Managament and Glancemy Property Management. A software company that provides property management solution, Condo Master by Comet Catcher was also interested to hire UTM real estate students. This programme was not only able to give an opportunity for students to be hired before graduation day but also to strengthen the relationship between UTM and property industry.
