Geaspatial Research in Spatial Planning (GRISP) Research Group

(GRiSP) is a pioneering research group committed to shaping the future of urban planning through advanced geospatial technologies. Established in the early 1990s, GRiSP has grown into a trusted group interest for research, innovation, and consultancy, collaborating closely with key urban planning authorities such as the Ministry of Federal Territories, PLANMalaysia, and local governments across Malaysia.

GRiSP’s work focuses on empowering urban planning practices with GIS, urban analytics, remote sensing and big data solutions. Our interdisciplinary team leverages spatial science to provide actionable insights for tackling critical urban challenges—ranging from land use and infrastructure planning to environmental sustainability and disaster preparedness.

Objectives

  • To lead research in applying GIS, ICT, and urban analytics to address urban planning issues.
  • To innovate in spatial technology use—such as mobile applications, remote sensing, and geospatial AI—to support smart and sustainable urban development.
  • To provide specialized training and consultancy services that strengthen geospatial capabilities within urban and regional planning sectors.
