Abstract

Position of a building has a significant impact on energy consumption. Proper orientation in respect to how light will come in through the building needs to be considered in order to reduce energy consumption. The objective of this paper is to find out costs saving achieved by considering the position of a building. It is achieved by conducting an analysis on the energy (electricity) consumption costs on one of Bung Hatta University’s Building in Padang, Indonesia. The building was modelled in two conditions, one is by using the existing layout and second is by turning the orientation of existing layout into the position with lowest energy consumption resulted from software simulation. Costs for electricity consumption was calculated for each model and then compared. In addition, sensitivity analysis was also conducted by varying the interest rate and the price per kilowatt hour. The finding illustrates that, by considering building position, a building can be ‘greener’ and leads to a sustainable building.

Abstract

The research objective is aimed at the sustainability analysis of catfish aquaculture business that is run by small fish farmers in coastal suburb of Padang. Value Chain Approach (VCA) and Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threat (SWOT) Analysis are applied and used as the base of descriptive qualitative analysis. It is found that the supply of production input especially fish food plays the most important role on the sustainability of aquaculture development. The intervention of government policy to push the aquaculture development in Padang coastal suburb is also important on one side but it could cause dependency of fish farmer on government support on other side. The contribution of parties in value chain are not yet optimum. Therefore, efforts should be focused on the optimizing the role of actors including institutions on the value chain according to market-based solutions which would sustain catfish aquaculture system in coastal suburban adang.

Abstract

The recent emergence of e-hailing applications like Uber, Grab, and EasyTaxi has received both praise and criticism from passengers and drivers alike in the Philippines. This study analysed the vehicle hailing preferences of taxi riders in Metro Manila, the Philippines, based on participation intent, and determine whether e-hailing applications are disrupting the current Philippine taxi industry using the Disruptive Innovation Theory as the study framework. Using a descriptive method of research, a total of 55 purposively sampled taxi riders participated in the survey. Results revealed that e-hailing applications are more favoured by passengers but only by a small marginal difference. Additionally, the e-hailing applications have failed to satisfy the conditions of being a disruptive innovation. Future studies may focus on the effects of the newly legalized e-hailing services on the public transportation system in the country using a larger sample size and different milieus, whether in the Philippines or overseas. In conclusion, the study argues that while e-hailing applications seem to disrupt the street-hailing industry, the industry’s recognition of the needs of drivers and passengers and resultant innovation can give it a much-needed second wind.

Abstract

In the era of urbanism, the emerging and ongoing development has been trendy and frequently associated with adverse environmental impacts such as anthropogenic climate change and waste secretion. Poor environmental behaviours among public are accused for the negative impacts towards the environment. Considering that, it is importance to understand the interrelationship of socio-psychological factors to environmental behaviour for it will help the stakeholders such as policy makers and social marketers to form better strategies to foster pro- environmental behaviour among the public. Previously, researchers had explored socio-psychological factors such as environmental concern, attitude, intention, cognition, awareness and knowledge that affect their environmental behaviour. Based on the precedent studies, this paper aims to review the gaps among socio-psychological factors in determining the public environmental behaviour among Malaysian. Theories and concepts of environmentalism that are related to environmental behaviours are discussed and reviewed. The paper concludes by introducing importance of socio-psychological factors that are plausible to explain the causes of human environmental behaviour for the use of policy and decision making.
