Studios led by Dr. Aiman and Dr. Nor Izura
Both studio calls for a design approach and exploration using speculative designs, possible futures, technology, imagination, stories, narratives, or scenarios. Students will be asked to develop their Design Intent / Manifesto in a series of progressive reflective writings and images to speculate what the project could be, inviting people around a possible future that they can work towards.
The studios will explore the idea of an alternative ways of making architecture by adopting the methods of Speculative Design and Futures Thinking.
“… a practice of creating imaginative projections of alternate presents and possible futures using design representations and objects”
On Speculative Design, DiSalvo 2012
Meanwhile, futures thinking is a creative and exploratory process and approach similar to strategic design that considers what is likely to change or stay the same within a certain future. It requires students to reflect on fundamental transformation over the next 10, 50 or more years. It is not to predict the future, rather it engages with the act of thinking complex issues and seeing new possibilities of design through cross-disciplinary approach.
“..investigation of the possible, which is rooted in the material and technological constraints of traditional architectural practice”
On Speculative Design in Architecture, Lukens and DiSalvo, 2011
The studios will be a testing grounds for collaborative and individual ideas for students to explore, within their own means, interests, and ability to produce an architectural outcome. Students will investigate the relationship between changes in society and changes in technological implementation within a specific site and context with reference to globalisation, in proposing their own methods, approach and technique to a speculative new architectural design.
