Have you ever wondered how architecture might be shaped in the future? Well, would you be surprised if humankind would be able to build a colony or architecture masterpiece on the outer world? Yes, nothing is impossible. There’s a lot of reasons that allow us to be excited and thrilled about what the future of the built environment holds upon us.

Virtual Reality

For example, the emergence of new technology allows the architect to build more freely and able to express their thoughts and vision through architecture. A few of these new technologies are Virtual Reality systems or also known as VR. It can visualize things virtually without the need of being physically present at the dedicated site or creation. Moreover, we also have smart cities and big data. This is to ensure that every particular aspect of the city or town can work efficiently to reduce the amount of unnecessary energy. For example smart trashbin that can indicate the level of its volume to ease the local authority for trash pickup.

Building Information Model (BIM)

BIM Modelling System

Next, we have BIM (Building Information Model) it is a system that eases the burden of every participating parties for the built environment projects. This is due to the fact that every detail and metadata is being shared seamlessly and can be easily identified when using BIM system in big-scale projects. This is to ensure the fluidity of the flow of work that was done was according to their schedule. Every participating parties will be able to save time and energy in compliment of this system’s existence.

Parametric Architecture

Not just that we also have parametric design architecture which seems to be taking over the architecture scene over the past recent years. Parametric design is a generative design system that can be tweaked by its constraints and parameters in the design process before the final outcome/design of it. Our building is usually constrained with various parameters which might affect the design. Therefore it is up to us, designers and architects to solve this issue with the help of technologies available. Architect has to make use the advantage collaborating with computer generative systems to produce an all-rounded design that tackles the needs and requirements of the project.

Sustainable Design

The pandemic has shown us what the future of architecture could be - The Washington Post

Last but not least, sustainability. We are far more driven than ever to live economically with our waste management by reducing energy consumption and also reducing the unnecessary energies that are being released to the environment. Designers have to design a building with considerations to the surrounding environment by focusing on 3 vital elements, the first one would be the types of materials used for the building construction while referring to the overall cost. Next, the energy that’s going to be used and transmitted by the building to its surrounding. And lastly, the experience of the building to the end-users.

I, myself as a student, am very astonished by how our architecture evolution has come so far. In my personal opinion, it is definitely our time to emphasize the usage of technology and sustainability in each and every aspect if possible. And we should always prioritise the end-user experience rather than the building itself. I am looking forward to this semester’s design project as it encourage us to think of every possible scenario and outcome in order for us to design something that can sustain for a long period of time. It seems like there aren’t any limitations to our design thinking as we are encouraged to brainstorm the ideas with all the different methods and media. Therefore, I am very excited to begin this design studio project ! Thank you for reading 🙂
