2nd week of the first semester in third year with an overwhelming of informations from every subject as well as assignments. The site for this semester is located at Kluang Johor whereby the studio work base master insisted the team to look at it from a perspective that was never been thought of before by me. He called it a speculative studio. He encourages us to not only look at it from Kluang area as it is but also try to relate it to the global perspective.
Initially, I genuinely don’t know what he is talking about but I’m assuming it is more to designing on something that sees a specimen more than what it is. Maybe from this aspect would be the planning of Kluang to achieve the global standard of town planning. Lucky enough that I was working on the legal part for our site analysis and encountered a draft from Kluang district local planning 2030. There I found out that Kluang was planning to achieve a certain aspect for example development of Smart City and Green city in reaching 2030. Besides Kluang is also planning in achieving sustainable development with respect to sustainable development goals (SDG). The targets to achieve the international as well as global was also stated but I wouldn’t go further as I think I’m not knowledgeable enough to explain and haven’t fully understood the whole planning yet.
Nevertheless, looking at our site at Kluang is actually a very strategic spot if I say so myself as it is the centre of Kluang. The opportunity is numerous given that the fact that there is a railway a few blocks away from our site. In terms of noise pollution near the site, the noise from the train does not disturb the ambience too much especially when planning a library or a museum. Things that need to be considered would be implementing greenery as well as shading devices in the design later on. I think for now this would be the summary of my understading and my opinion on Kluang. In regards of understanding what Dr. Aiman is explanning/encourage would be to explore more on the materials/documents that had been given in the studio brief. I’m looking forward to learn more and have deeper understanding on what I am not aware of currently.
