The student been given project to create an institutional center that response to global warming issues that have happen around the world. My name is Rasyid an architectural student in Univerisiti Teknologi Malaysia currently in 4th semester trying my best to tackle the issues that have been given for this project. Our project located at Puteri Harbour and very near to the harbour nearby and it was a parking lot. When we go for a site visit I find that the global warming affected not just the human but also the creature under the sea. The biggest threat is when the life of coral began to die slowly.
Coral bleaching is a result from the warm water cause by the global warming. When the heat energy from the sun enter the earth they gives heat to the atmosphere and help the earth planet to grow the green creature. This heat energy later being absorb into the sea and there are study being conducted about the sea which state that the ocean has absorbed more than 90 per cent of the heat gained by the planet between 1971 and 2010. The process of the ocean absorbing this heat leads to increase in ocean temperatures and associated sea level rise.
The National Ocean Service state that coral reef in the sea live between 18 – 29 Celsius and can somehow withstand 40 Celsius in a short period of time. The global warming that happen around the world somehow impact the shelter for the fishes to live. Coral have big roles. They not just a shelter for the fish and other sea creature. But it also act to protect coastlines from storms and erosion. They are also are a source of food and new medicines. Over half a billion people depend on reefs for food, income, and protection.
As an Architecture student who not just responsible to the human we also carry the responsible to look after our nature. Purposing a coral reef research center or related building program is not the best solution for the problem. This is due to the location of the site that do not have any coral and might have purpose a different program that not suitable for the user in Puteri Harbour. Being aware of this situation, I try my best to tackle the situation by purposing an Innovation center which focus to the needs of people in the Puteri Harbour.
Puteri Harbour have many residential area like apartment. I look this as an opportunity for Malaysia to have a maker community. The maker culture is a contemporary subculture representing a technology-based extension of DIY culture that intersects with hardware-oriented parts of hacker culture and revels in the creation of new devices as well as tinkering with existing ones. The human have done a lot of innovation and this is the reason why we achieve today technologies. Having a place for the people in residential house to create small invention and easy access to the material and machinery like 3D printer really help the people to creatively create more innovation.
The Innovation Hub that will be in Puteri Harbour will also educate people about the global warming. beside the intention is to have a learning center that help people to create more innovation and held many green innovation event or competition in the institutional building. Apart from there the institutional building will be a place for people to come in their leisure time for many invention that they wanted to create or learn. They also can switch ideas when they gather in this building. With this I hope the building will help the community to create more green technology but also in the future save the world.
I find that the coral bleaching issues is very interesting. I wish in the future I can help the sea creature to survive by designing a coral reef facilities. The most strategic location for a coral reef institutional building will be near the sea which have those creature. This will help the scientist to easily access the coral and install their innovation to protect the coral or at least help the go through the deadly global warming that might end all the coral creature in an instant. I enjoy designing innovation hub as much as I been given opportunity to explore about the coral. I wish there are more building facilities that help the nature to recover being built in the future.
