Design 4 Wrap-up

1 Site Analysis

site synthesis done by Asyiqin, Arman and myself

I did write write my reflection on the field trip we made for the site analysis to Puteri Harbour. The post is below :

“My initial reaction to the place was, awe. The place is certainly well developed and looks very alienated, in a good way, with the rest of our county’s architecture and landscape style.

High rise buildings to tilt your head up to look, wide pavements for both pedestrian’s and cyclist’s comfort, intriguing architectures; this are some of the things that caught my attention.”

from the “Puteri Harbour” post

After that trip we , in a group made a detailed site analysis. During this activity, we get to work in groups. Teamwork, good listening skills, leadership skills were useful while I and my teammates, Asyiqin and Arman tiresomely searched and compiled particulars, facts and details for our part of the project. Even through the sleepless nights and restless days, we had a great time working together.

Then came the presentation day, our workbase was the first to present, and being a first presenter myself, I was terrified of the possible mortification I might experience during this. But thank someone, it went smoothly despite of minor blunders I have done. I received some approbation from my workbase members and myself (because why not), after it.

2 Project 1A (individual)

project 1A (individual) board

Project 1A individual was a fun project, I get to be creative and get to choose the type of the learning center that will be my solicitude for the rest of semester. I started by synthesising the site analysis and came up with capital considerations in the site, followed by proposing the target audience. After these steps I realised that our site is lack of cultural identity. Taking the advise of the my workbase master Dr Izura – she advised me to choose a topic or type that resonates with my interest – I decided on cultural center as the type of building. Subsequently, did some research on precedence studies, came up with manifesto, building programmes, building massing and space planning.

manifesto

Later during the “cross-crit” session with Dr PC, he gave me plenty of ideas and advice to improve my design intent, and building programmes. He especially told me to specify the type of cultural center I will be proposing since it is too vague and too big of a subject to focus on. In upcoming alterations and design progress, I took Dr PC’s words to action.

3 Project 1B

This biggest project of the semester was rollercoaster ride with days of ups and downs. Inspiration struck during the early days of this projects, after going through some of the senior works. Bamboo became a main subject of my design for the building. I did some research and looking for books (sadly in vain) on the subject of bamboo in both construction and building programmes.

first board of the presentation boards (design intent)

After tiresome amount of crit, I came up with the design. The ‘BOO is a bamboo working cultural center , not only the building offers bamboo working and knowledge on bamboo working, but also the building itself is a exhibition of a kind to offer about the underappreciated art of bamboo working. the building is separated in two part. One of the part of the building mostly made of bamboos. I have used a few ancient and traditional bamboo jointing for this part, which are, ‘wedge connection’ bamboo jointing and ‘positive fitting’ bamboo jointing. Several bamboos criss-cross to create beams and columns, not only for firm and strong structure but also for aesthetic purpose.

The presentation for the project was held after two week of the submission. Meanwhile we had some smaller projects which were more refreshing and less stressful. The presentation went smoothly, I did my very best on laying out and explaining my design and my board.

4 Portfolio

Last but not least the portfolio. It was my first ever, since before this it was force to be held online due to the Covid pandemic. It was incredible feeling to see our works being displayed. That was the last part of the major project for Design 4.

5 Reflection

I learned a lot during this semester. In the subject of construction, design intent and even software skills. The subject bamboo has peeked my interest in not only in environmental friendly buildings but also in overall architecture. I feel like I found a subject or more precise a design style that I might stick with and will be exploring further in my upcoming year.

This whole semester I get to do it face to face, which was an absolutely incredible experience. The experience was definitely different from the previous semesters. Can’t wait for more. Besides, I was more confident and thriving while doing this project. Mostly the credit goes for my workbase master Dr Izura. She was a great teacher. She was patient and wise throughout this journey, giving the knowledge and time as much as she can.

Plus, I had such a great time being one of the member of the workbase 1. everyday in a studio was fun and stress-free. I hope the very best for all of them.

And that is a wrap on design 4 and year 2, I am a little nervous for next year but excited as well.

okay, bye.
