Puteri Harbour

by Asyiqin

As a Site Study for our first project, we had a field trip to Puteri Harbour. I had a chance to go there beforehand, with few of my Workbase members.

My initial reaction to the place was, awe. The place is certainly well developed and looks very alienated, in a good way, with the rest of our county’s architecture and landscape style.

High rise buildings to tilt your head up to look, wide pavements for both pedestrian’s and cyclist’s comfort, intriguing architectures; this are some of the things that caught my attention.

Speaking of pavements, I am always interested in reducing vehicles for environmental reasons, by introducing comfortable pavements people

are encouraged to walk and also to cycle to places. Canopies are also provided at the pedestrian walks to shield pedestrians from the sun. Another noticeable thing, at least for me is that, in between building there are pavements too, although they are only for pedestrians. In a fun way, it imitates small city, as shown in the picture above.

Puteri Harbour is overall feels like a dream city, but my question is can working class and middle class people, enjoy this wonderful experience? This city is incredibly expensive city and an obvious attraction for the foreigners. Some Malaysian do live there, but most Malaysian there are either workers or tourists. It is a place for working class and middle class people to walk around, take pictures and leave dreaming about living there. Maybe this city could a precedence, for future plans in our country, preferably an affordable one for all.

Anyway, I did have fun there. It was a wonderful experience with friends and lecturers who are in Architect field , it would not be the same with any other people.
