Today we had a talk from two invited speakers on the theme of data collection, site analysis and synthesis. Dr. Sharifah of UTM MArch teaching team gave her talk entitled; ‘Space Syntax and the Development of Architectural Studio with Evidence-Based Design Decision Methods’ while Dr. Kristanti of Universitas Indonesia on ‘Site Mapping: An Inquiry’.
Both talks provided a different perspective on urban site study particularly on the use of tools as part of the instrument of inquiry. Dr. Sharifah’s Space Syntax methods utilises digital information, algorithms and visual graphs analysis to derive findings of human movements while Dr. Kristanti demonstrated a manual version of visualising outcomes through the use of mappings. Mappings according to her is a method of inquiry in order to dissect the gathered information for clarity as well as to find patterns.
Students continue to discuss the talk within the workbase where the use of mapping could help the macro and the micro team in the site study to visualise their own findings of Kluang.
