Possible Future Studio

Design 5 2021/2022

This semester the studio will be looking at how we could look at Kluang town in Johor as part of our research in possible future scenarios through series of narratives and images. This approach within Design 5 is to understand the potential of the town within a larger context of global issues and to design and propose possible outcomes, whether in architecture, social, economy or technology. The studio is grounded on a pragmatic theme of Design 5 course by emphasising on building conventions as well the compliance to local building planning and codes (e.g UBBL), nonetheless, the speculative future outcomes will be the basis of students critical arguments and line of thoughts, beyond their studio requirements.

The studio will run for 14 Weeks, where each of the student will share their progress and outcomes at least every fortnightly on the ideas, issues or interesting facts they find throughout their inquiry and design process. We will collaborate with Izura’s 2nd Year studio on a similar approach where students will have the chance to collaborate across the school.

We will also make references to other future works (Cecilia Tham, Neri Oxman and others) as part of our case studies within the studio. Apart from the exploration of ideas, students to produce an architectural design outcomes complying to the technical requirements in the Program Design Matrix and local building codes.
