FABU Students Practice \u2018Waste to Wealth\u2019 through Gotong Royong<\/strong><\/p>\n

JOHOR BAHRU, 1\u00a0Nov \u2013 It is always good and beneficial to not throwing the waste and reuse it for something else.<\/p>\n

This is the aim of the Greenknight team\u00a0to turn waste items to usable ones during the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Gotong-Royong Perdana program.<\/p>\n

Greenknight, consists of forth\u00a0year landscape architecture students from EARTH Society, Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (FABU) collaborated with the staff and students to\u00a0spread awareness on green lifestyle and also to clean the faculty\u2019s environment in preparing for convocation.<\/p>\n

In this program, 100 participants were divided into four groups to clean the areas that were zoned accordingly around the faculty.<\/p>\n

Simulation on composting was the main activity conducted by Greenknight team and EARTH Society representatives by using food waste from food courts near FABU as well as waste obtained from gotong-royong session.<\/p>\n

The program was called \u201cfrom waste to wealth\u201d because they transformed waste and rubbish into compost fertilizer.<\/p>\n

The first step in the composting process was to look for a flat landed location to lay the compost barrel. The first layer is a layer of \u2018brown\u2019 or carbon. Participants placed carbonated materials such as newspapers, dry leaves and egg boards.<\/p>\n

Step two was to lay the \u2018green\u2019 layer or nitrogen. This layer consists of easy-to-use food waste from home. Among the ingredients are vegetables, fruit skins and fruit residues. The required carbon and nitrogen content is 3: 1.<\/p>\n

Next step was to lay the \u2018brown\u2019 layer back. This method is repeated until the carbon and nitrogen content is balanced. The resulting food waste can be reduced and used as compost fertilizer.<\/p>\n

This compost fertilizer can be used for tree planting around UTM. This fertilizer will also be used for the SHIP project which will take place on January 12, 2019<\/p>\n

Compost Layering technique was applied in four compost bins which were provided by Majlis Bandaraya Iskandar Puteri (MBIP) and EcoKnights.<\/p>\n

These bins would be monitored by the EARTH members every fortnight.<\/p>\n

The product produced would be used for this upcoming SHIP event on 12\u00a0January 2019.<\/p>\n
