A group of Urban and Regional Planning students, Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia won Champion in the Young Mayor Competition: Planning a Clean and Green Township 2017 under Category Senior B organized by Activistar Private Limited, Singapore. The competition was held at the National Design Centre, Singapore on 1 – 2nd April 2017 with the theme “Phnom Penh Rising”.
Activistar’s first Assembly Series of 5 cities (2011-2016) features Hanoi, Iskandar Malaysia, Yangon, Manila and Jakarta. The second Assembly Series of the next 5 cities began with Phnom Penh (2017), and offered all participants a fresh look of South East Asia. Teams from the whole of Southeast Asia were invited to participate, especially students from the case-study country. This was in line with the vision to reach out to as many youths as possible because the sustainability message is universal and is beyond borders. This was to encourage cross border exchanges among youths to increase knowledge and cultural exchange. The competition involved four stages: 1) Workshop, 2) Written Proposal, 3) Multi Media Presentation, and 4) Model Building.
The annual event saw participation in three categories, Junior, Senior A and Senior B. Two (2) groups from UTM, Malaysia were selected to compete in the final round together with eight (8) other groups from Singapore under the senior category – college, polytechnic and university. The judges comprised of members of the architectural/planning professionals, universities, embassies, multi-national corporations and consultants from Indochina.
The team from UTM1 comprising Mr. Wan Muhd. Aqib Wan Mohd. Ashaary, Ms. Josephine Lee Siaw Ling, Ms. Nagananteni Subramanian, Ms. Nurul Ainaa Anuar, Ms. Nurul Amirah Zulkipli , Ms. Nur Husna Mahizan and their group advisor Dr. Siti Hajar Misnan won the first prize. They received SGD1000 and a trophy. Singapore’s Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Nanyang Polytechnic won the 1st Runner Up and the 2nd Runner Up respectively. Winners of the competition received their prizes from the judges and the Organisers.
Although the UTM2 team comprising Mr. Raja Ahmad Syakirfikri Raja Samion, Ms. Azreen Nadzirah Azmi, Ms. Umiera Yasmin Ibrahim, Siti Noor Syuhadah Abd. Mulok, Ms. Nakhwa Sa’don, Ms. Siti Amirah Mokhtar and their group advisor Dr. Gobi Krishna Sinniah did not win, they were delighted to make the final round.

Greenovation Research Group conducted a workshop on Child Friendly Cities at Makassar on 3 to 4 April 2017. From the group, four PhD students, Irfan Suria, Joharudin Samion, Mega Suria and Arti Manikam assisted Dr Ismail Said and Dr Nor Zalina Harun from IIUM to teach fifty 3rd year students from Department of Urban Planning, Universitas Islam Negeri Alauddin in Makassar.
They taught how to design five urban spaces as children playspaces in less-privileged neighborhood, an open space beside a park, and a upper class neighborhood. The Alauddin’s students were much delighted to learn the fast approach of designing the children’s environment. The hospitality given by docents and dean of Faculty of Sainstex at Alauddin was superb. Greenovation plans to come again to Makassar in March 2018.

A Gold Medal to Quantity Surveyor and Architecture students in the International UTMBridge Competition 2017! Two group of QS and Architecture students won 2nd Prize for Presentation and Multimedia category and 9th Place on Overall Champion out of 80 participants in the competition. The International UTMBridge Competition was organised by the Faculty of Civil Engineering held on 27-29 March 2017 in UTM.
They received a total of RM1,150 and a trophy. Congratulations to Syamsul Hendra Mahmud, Nurshikin Mohamad Shukery and Dr. Nafisah Abdul Rahiman, the group advisor from Department of Quantity Surveying and the students.

The paper titled “An Integrated Green Research Centre for Built Environment” authored by Sayang Asniessa Bt. Mohd Azman, Malsiah Bt. Hamid & Dodo Yakubu Aminu.
Won 3rd Place Best Poster in the just concluded 2nd International Built Environment Undergraduate Research Competition (BEURC) 2017 which was held on 30th March 2017 at the Mercu Alam Bina, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The paper was a product of Sayang Asniessa Bt Mohd Azman 2nd year 2nd Semester Design Studio Work 2015/2016 Session supervised by Dr. Malsiah Bt. Hamid. The outcome was an iconic green design for the built environment researchers. Ulrich (1983), Psycho-Evolutionary Theory (PET) for stress recovery was used to underpin the research.

On 12 March 2017, the Landscape UTM Alumni Workshop Series was continuing with the second workshop which entitled “From Form to Concept”. This workshop patronised by 9 practising Landscape Architects who are all UTM alumni. The workshop participated not only the final year students but also a crowd from lower year landscape students. The workshop began with a design critique session of the final year students’ projects. Likewise, the crit session essentially to internalise students’ conceptual design and their critical thinking in developing landscape master plan and detail area design.
After the lunch break, the program continues by the open lecture delivered by LAr. Mr Lee Fei Chong, Alfred and Mr Ng Sze Oun. Both speakers respectively shared the creating a landscape plan using form composition, philosophy concept through art; and inspiring futuristic to create the good design concept. Throughout workshop session, another fruitful learning process pertains a great landscape design involvement is from concept stages till landscape detail construction.

December 2016, Department of Landscape Architecture from Faculty of Built Environment, UTM Skudai was invited to entry landscape design competition for equestrian centre initiated by Dato Sri’ Mahamad Fathil Mahmood, the owner of 3Q Equestrian Centre, Rawang. A team of 10 landscape students accompanied by 4 lecturers (Dr Zanariah Jasmani, Dr. Lee Yoke Lai, Dr. Sapura Mohamad, and En. Ahmad Long) conducted a field survey and site study at Rawang’s Equestrian Centre.
UTM competition team prepared a landscape master plan for two months and consequently presented our landscape design proposal conceptual theme: ‘Lush Tropical Riding and Living’ at Dataran Prima, Petaling Jaya on 2 March 2017 (Thursday). Besides, a dynamic roles of landscape aesthetic design, the key idea integrations of tropical landscape design and ecosystem services is to heighten and sustain the landscape services and landscape management of an equestrian centre. The result of this competition will be announced in early April 2017. In all, students gained a fruitfulness opportunity from this competition that allows developing a greater understanding of equestrian landscape design as well as to play their roles in young entrepreneur landscaping.
