International Design Colloquium Series 2 Between Architecture Schools from Universitas Tanjungpura and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

On 1st July 2021, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Architecture Programme had conducted International Design Colloquium Series 2 between Universitas Tanjungpura (UNTAN) and UTM. This event was a continuity from the previous Series 1, a version for architecture master students.

During this event, the selected undergraduate students have to showcase their work based on their studio project brief. There were more than 100 participants from Malaysia, Indonesia and China architecture schools.

This event was chaired by Dr. Muhammad Faizal Abdul Rani and started with a welcoming speech from Prof. Dr. Syed Ahmad Iskandar Syed Ariffin, the Director of Institute Sultan Iskandar. The event was then followed by a speech from Dr. Ing. Ir. Slamet Widodo, the Vice-Dean for Academic Affairs, Faculty of Engineering & Architecture, UNTAN.

There were four panellists from UTM Architecture school who had participated in this event such as Dr. Iziq Eafifi Ismail, Dr. Leng Pau Chung, Ar. Chan Wai Lai and Dr. Izura Tukiman. Meanwhile, UNTAN Architecture school was also represented by four panellists which were Dr. Uray Fery Andi, Bapak Affrilyno, Dr. Syaiful Muazir and Ibu Lestari.

In addition, six students from UTM Architecture school had also take part in this event. They were Alya Mohd Noor (Playlab), Ani Nadirah Anuar (Kempas Wellness Centre), Amirul Danial Othman Amin Nordin (ICIPD Research Center), Lee Zhi Kang (Sou Fijumoto Architect Office – Explore the in Between), Ahmad Januar Akbar Mubarok (A Marine Activist Training Centre) and Kristine Low Sze Min (Palace of Equity: Johor Bahru Inclusive Learning Centre).

Meanwhile, the student representatives from UNTAN were Surya Priva Jaya (Wasaloka – Science Techno Park & Innovation Center Universitas Tanjungpura), Yasmin Alifia Amanda (Lakuna – Hotel, Convention and Training Center), Grace Novika (Universitas Tanjungpura Science Techno Park – Unify Green and Sustainable), Muhammad Adji Maulana (Green Canyon Hotel, Convention and Training Center), Norita (Green Science Techno Park – Universitas Tanjungpura) and Anandea Maharani Azzahra (Arunika Hotel, Convention, & Training Center Universitas Tanjungpura).

Two parallel sessions were held at Room 1 which was moderated by Dr. Muhammad Faizal Abdul Rani from UTM and Room 2 by Dr. Azalillah Ramdani Musa from UTM. For each session, the panels had provided various comments and inputs based on the project presented.

Overall, this online event was extremely beneficial to both institutions because it had provided the platform and opportunity to share expertise and relate it with the current situation. This event also showed that more collaboration are possible to be done in the future to help strengthen bilateral networking between the two universities.

UTM-SRMIST To Enhance Built Environment Development in Two Nations

A virtual Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) with SRM Institute Science and Technology (SRMIST), India, was held on 6 July 2021 to produce services and excellence in academic and research based on the demands of both countries in enhancing community resilience and the built environment wellbeing.

The MoU was signed by UTM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Ts. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail and witnessed by Acting Dean of Faculty of Built Environment & Surveying (FBES), UTM, Assoc. Prof. Sr Dr. Razali Adul Hamid. The MoU signing ceremony was also attended by the Deputy of Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, MoU committee members and academic staff of Architecture, UTM.

Meanwhile, SRMIST counterpart was Director of International Relations, Faculty’s Deans and Head of Departments, Dr. C. Muthamizhchelvan (Vice-Chancellor in charge). This MoU constitutes legally expanding and outreach between UTM and SRMIST networking.

Speaking on occasion, Vice-Chancellors from both universities were not only agreed to collaborate in learning and research activities, but they also pointed out the importance of both universities to stepping forward and getting involved in CSR activities. This is vital for both institutions to become leadership champions and provide stewardship by addressing the environmental footprint to help the built environment development in both countries for humanity’s benefit, especially during these challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The agreement to collaborate between UTM and the SRMIST, India, was discussed virtually between both universities on the 26 October 2020, which had involved Director of Architecture Program, Assoc. Prof. Dr Alice Sabrina Ismail, representing UTM and the representatives of SRMIST, Director of International Relations, Dr. Kartar Singh, Dean, College of Engineering and Technology, Prof. Dr. T. V. Gopal, Dean, School of Architecture and Interior Design, Dr. P. Satheesh Kumar, Head, Department of Architecture, Prof. Dr. C. Pradeepa, Head (i/c), Department of Design, Ar. Saravana Raja and MoU Coordinator, School of Architecture and Interior Design, Prof. Dr. R.Shanthi Priya.

Since then, numerous academic activities and research alliances had successfully achieved between these two institutions, specifically in the built environment involving the field of architecture. UTM and SRMIST had conducted many international joint design colloquium, knowledge and cultural sharing sessions in cooperative building design projects as a collaborative effort. These kind of programmes had significantly attained more excellent respond and learning goals that benefit the academic fraternity in both institutions and had successfully reached out to the broader global community.

Numerous future collaborations between UTM and SRMISTwill be conducted soon and it is hoped that both institutions will achieve high excellence in research and academic endeavours.

In short, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) would like to express gratitude to SRM Institute Science and Technology (SRMIST) and all the parties involved in ensuring the success of this virtual MoU signing ceremony.

FABU Career Program Attracts 15 Real Estate Companies

Since 2015, Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (FABU), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has organised physical interview sessions for Real Estate final year students. However, due to COVID-19 pandemic, the program has continued using a virtual platform.

On 4th July 2021 which during Movement Control Order (MCO) 3.0, FABU Real Estate Department had organised the 1st Virtual Real Estate Industry Career 2021: Exclusive Career Talk & Job Interview Series. The event was coordinated by Real Estate Undergraduate Program Coordinator, Dr. Shazmin Shareena Ab. Azis.

Continuing the spirit of the program, this year virtual interview program aimed to facilitate UTM Real Estate students in landing a good career prospect after their graduation and increase the employability rate despite the pandemic circumstances. Even in the area of the pandemic, the number of companies interested to join this yearly event has steadily increased.

This year, a total of 15 real estate companies including property developer, facilities management, valuation, estate agency and GLC’s company all over Malaysia had participated in this program. These companies including KLCC holding, IOI properties, Permodalan Negeri Selangor Berhad, Knight Frank Malaysia, Comet Catcher Sdn. Bhd., Hsr Property Management Sb, Dualtap Property Management, Zeon Property Management, PMC Facilities & Real Estate Sdn. Bhd., Keepers Property Management, Allied Group Property Service Sdn. Bhd., Landlords Property & Facilities Management Sdn. Bhd., Straqta Property Management and Melmax Management.

A total of 50 UTM Real Estate final year students from Bachelor of Science (Property Management) and Bachelor of Science (Land Administration & Development) had participated in this program. This 1st virtual interview program received good feedback from the industries and students. Some of the students also managed to get hired immediately after the interview session.
