Exhibition and Seminar on Architectural Heritage Hospital

An exhibition and seminar on Architectural Heritage Hospitals was held on the 13th of October 2009 at the lobby and Senate Hall, Administrative Building, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.  It was officiated by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Students Affairs), Professor Dr Mohd Tajuddin bin Ninggal.

The exhibition featured findings of studies by a group of 58 third year Bachelor of Architecture students and 6 lecturers headed by Dr Raja Nafida bte Raja Shahminan.  Thirteen hospital buildings in Johor and Selangor were studied.  These buildings owned by the Ministry of Health were chosen for their historical and architectural value and a majority is over 50 years old.

Among them are:

  • Administrative and Clinical Buildings, Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Johor Bahru, Johor
  • Adminstrative Building and Complex for Occupational Therapy, Permai Hospital, Tampoi
  • Rural Clinic, Permas, Kukup
  • Grisek Health Clinic, Pagoh
  • Wards 1 and 2, Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital, Muar
  • Maternity ward, Tangkak Hospital
  • Administrative Building and Quarters for Leprosy Patients, Leprosy Hospital Tampoi
  • Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes at Sungai Buluh National Centre for Leprosy Control, Selangor
  • Mosque at Sungai Buluh National Centre for Leprosy Control, Selangor.

The exhibition and seminar was held to disclose findings of studies undertaken over a period of 6 months on the history and architecture of the above hospital buildings.  There has never been an intensive study done on these buildings before.  Documentation of the history and architecture of these buildings is a conservation effort by the Centre for Malay Architectural Studies/Pusat Kajian Alam Bina Melayu (KALAM) and will be historical evidence and reference of their existence.

The government in its efforts to upgrade the quality of health care in the country has built new and sophisticated hospitals however old hospital buildings with historical and architectural value should not be neglected.  The history and architecture of these old hospital buildings unless recorded will never be known because they were not designed as hospitals but were used as hospitals due to the need at the time.

The study is part of an annual programme since 1975 and is a joint effort between architecture students and KALAM, Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. The Centre for Malay Architectural Studies/Pusat Kajian Alam Bina Melayu (KALAM) has successfully undertaken studies on and documented the history and architecture of over 400 buildings in Malaysia and Thailand.

The Study Of The U.S. Thematic Institute For Foreign Undergraduate Students On The Environment

Hafiz Shaik Abd Hardy

A Third Year Student of Urban and Regional Planning, UTM, Abd. Hafiz b. Sheik Abd. Hardy has been selected as one of the 7 Malaysian undergraduates to join a special program at East-West Centre in University of Hawaii. This program entitled The Thematic Institute on the Environment will take place from 10th May until 21st June, 2009.  Other participants that had been selected from Malaysia include students from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Sabah and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. They will join other participants from Singapore, Fiji and Papua New Guinea in Hawaii. The selection was done competitively by the United States Embassy in the respective countries through the resumes that had been sent to them.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the students who take part in this six-week program will look at global environmental challenges and the need for active leadership to deal with them.  The program will provide a deeper understanding of the environmental movement in the U.S. and how advocates for environmental conservation and action undertake advocacy, market, policy, cultural and scientific approaches to environmental issues.  During final week of their program, the students will travel to San Francisco, California and visit the Capitol Hill at Washington, D.C for a field study.

The institute aims to provide a transformative learning experience for participants through introductions to a broad spectrum of American life; enhance networks of understanding linking participants with U.S. environmental actors and each other; transfer, where applicable, lessons from the U.S. to the participants’ countries; provide opportunities for U.S. practitioners to learn about participants’ countries environmental challenges; link the next generation of foreign leaders in the environmental movement with the U.S.; and develop collaborative projects among participants themselves and with U.S. organizations.

On 2nd April 2009, the Public Affairs and the Economic Section organized a pre-departure briefing and visa interview for the 7 Malaysian undergraduate students at the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.  The students met with Public Affairs staff to discuss the purpose and content of their upcoming program, and what to expect when traveling in Hawaii and the Continental United States.  They met other Embassy staff as well, including the Economic Counselor and the Environment Science Technology and Health officer.  Several local journalists were invited to attend and interview the students.
