The Department of Urban and Regional Planning received a delegation of 20, Fourth Year Undergraduate students from the Department of Real Estate, Faculty of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore (NUS) on the 22nd of February 2016. The delegation from NUS was headed by Assistant Professor Dr. Lee Kwan Ok and accompanied by Professor Ooi Thian Leong, Joseph and Dr. Masaki Mori. The Head of Department, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Associate Professor Datin Dr. Norsiah binti Abdul Aziz was present to receive the delegates to the Faculty. The delegates were given a lecture on the Planning System in Malaysia focusing on the Planning of the City of Johor Bahru and Iskandar Malaysia by Associate Professor Dr. Foziah Johar. The lecture was one of the modules on Urban Planning in Asian Cities taught at the Department of Real Estate, Faculty of Design and Environment, NUS.

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Built Environment had its meeting of students from Year 1 to Year 4 with the respective Academic Advisors on 18th February (Thursday) 2016 at the Convention Hall, B12. The meeting began with the presentation of prizes for academic excellence Semester 1 2015/2016 on the basis of the best CGPA to respective students for each Year at the meeting. Students who received prizes were Josephine Lee Siaw Ling (Year 1), Siti Nabila binti Mokhtar (Year 2), Zul Waqar bin Khasbollah (Year 3) and Siti Balqis binti Abdul Aziz (Year 4). Prizes comprising of books entitled “A Town Planning History, Charles Reade, Town Planning British Malaya 1921 – 1929” by Kamalruddin Shamsudin (KL Din), and “Rahsia Melakar Cepat” by Jomaithir bin Johari and Nor Azimah bte Markaban, and certificate were presented to the best students by the Head of Department, Associate Professor Datin Dr.Norsiah binti Abd Aziz. The meeting was then folowed by a discussion between Academic Advisors and their respective advisees on their academic affairs and performance.

The Logistics and Transportation Research Group, Centre for Innovative Planning and Development (CiPD), Faculty of Built Environment, organised a one-day International Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Seminar on 25th February 2016 at the Convention Hall, Faculty of Built Environment, UTM, Johor Bahru. The seminar which was officiated by the Dean of the Faculty, Associate Professor Dr. Roslan Amiruddin is a joint collaboration between CiPD and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Built Environment, UTM.
About 50 academicians, researchers and students attended the event and a total of 11 papers were presented by renowned Professors and researchers from South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia. All papers addressed topics for sustainable urban infrastructure development in urban planning, urban environment, transportation and social planning. A technical tour to the Tanjung Piai National Park was arranged for the delegates on the second day. During the tour, delegates were briefed on the geographical and ecological significance of Tanjung Piai by the Resident Officer of the Department of National Parks.
The seminar also saw the establishment of an agreement for continued academic cooperation through joint research, publications, academic programs and hosting of seminars between researchers of the participating countries. The Ho Chi Minh City University of Transportation, Vietnam will host the forthcoming seminar next year.

Dr. Mehdi and his research team won the bronze medal at the Invention and Innovative Awards 2016, Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE 2016) which was held on 18-20 Feb. 2016 at PWTC, Kuala Lumpur. Since its inception in 2001, MTE has evolved to be the definitive international invention and innovation expo in the region. The annual event showcased more than 500 innovative inventions and creative innovations to a targeted audience of trade visitors, connecting inventors and innovations to investors, manufacturers and distributors to bolster commercialization. The event is one of the most prominent invention awards in the region. More than 500 participants from public and private universities and, national and multinational companies participated in the expo. The expo also saw international participants from the Philippines, Indonesia and Croatia.
The invention named SEM is a sensor station that is an integration of sensing technologies into passive Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID) tags to measure major pollutants such as CO, CO2, SO2, NO, NO2, O3, PM2.5 and PM10, in addition, to temperature, humidity, pressure and noise level. It is a compact and inexpensive sensing system.
The SEM research team includes Dr. Hassan Chizari, Mahmood Safaei, Dr. Zohreh Asadi Shekari, Dr. Zahid Sultan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zaly Shah bin Muhammad Hussein, Prof. Dr. Kwang Sik Kim, Prof. Dr. Amran Hamzah and Prof. Dr. Mohd Hamdan Bin Haji Ahmad.
