Dr. Mehdi  And Team Won  Gold Medal, Special Award And 4th.  Best Project At  Malaysian Research Conference And Innovation Exhibition 2015 (MRCIE 2015) For An Innovative Smart Environment Monitoring (SEM) Device

Dr. Mehdi Moeinaddini, Dr. Zahid Sultan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zaly Shah from Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Built Environment (FAB) and Dr. Zohreh Asadi Shekari, a post doctoral researcher at Center for Innovative Planning and Development (CiPD), FAB, won three (3) awards – a gold medal, Special Award and 4th. Best Project at Malaysian Research Conference and Innovation Exhibition 2015 (MRCIE 2015) for their innovative Smart Environment Monitoring (SEM) device. The event was organised by the Research and Innovation Section,  UniKL, MITEC on 2nd. – 3rd. December 2015 at Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), Malaysian Institute of Industrials Technology (MITEC), Persiaran Sinaran Ilmu, Bandar Seri Alam, Johor Bahru, Johor. Other team members that were involved in the project are Mahmood Safaei and Dr Hassan Chizari.

The Smart Environmental Monitoring (SEM) device attempted to improve the current devices i.e. Reference Method (RM) device and Sensor Based (SB) device. The SEM  is designed using  more efficient approaches such as very small size, modifiable function (the device can be modified based on the number of tested pollutants that a customer needs so, the price can be reduced significantly), real time measurement (monitoring and transferring data while measuring), smart connectivity (the device can connect with each other and can be controlled from one centre) and smart area (it can be used at different scales from buildings and streets  to the neighbourhoods and cities). The SEM device can measure major pollutions such as CO2, CO, NO, NO2, SO2, O3, PM2.5 and PM10 in addition to the noise pollution, pressure, humidity and temperature.

The conference and innovation exhibition received about 100 participants from local and international higher learning institutions which include  UTM, UniKL, UM, UPM and several universities from China and Indonesia.  The awards were presented by Professor Edward Sweeney, Professor of Logistics and Head, Engineering System & Management (ESM), School of Engineering and Applied Science, Aston University, Birmingham, UK.
