On 27th May 2011, Dr Hisyam Rasidi and Dr Ismail Said delivered two lectures at Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sriwijaya, Palembang in Indonesia. Dr Hisyam explained on Sustainable Development: A Lesson from Science City and Dr Ismail talked on Placeness and Placelessness in Urban Context: An Overview on Urban Sustainability.The audience include academics and undergraduates from Department of Architecture. Apart from sharing knowledge with academics and students from Sriwijaya, the talks generate networking between Sriwijaya and UTM including the opportunity to conduct joint studio project; Landscape Urban Design studio for the coming semester.

Recently, a group of 27 second year landscape architecture students from Faculty of Built Environment, UTM have conducted a study and produced a comprehensive Landscape Master Plan proposal for FELDA Tenggaroh 1 in Mersing, Johor. This community service is for the benefit of local community towards improving their environmental wellbeing. As for the students, they are compelled to do so by the school as part of academic requirements, in lieu of SBL 2046: Landscape Community Design Studio.
This program is deliberately planned to connect servicing the community different environmental context with started learning outcomes: “to practice analytical skills and criticism in real landscape community through establishing enquiry by design; understand and apply an aspect of landscape planning and design, addressing an ecological , sustainable and livable community planning approaches.”
Two lecturers worked as studio masters cum. experts attest to the requirement of engaging students in conducting site visits and survey, data inventory, analysis and synthesis prior to establishing design concept, schematic and final master plan together with details on technical and construction drawings. Several conceptual themes such as Green Heart and Eco-village were proposed as an alternative development gearing towards greening for more social-recreational opportunities and conserving the existing ecology, natural resources for the sustainable community living respectively.

The holistic approach is to ensure high quality service learning judging from the overwhelming support during the presentation and exhibition held at the community hall . Finally, the students and the community as well as the FELDA Authority seem to benefit from this program of high commitment, team work, sharing and fun, making community service an effective learning tool.

On the 29th of April 2011, the Department of Landscape Architecture will be having the semester’s design portfolio day. A total of 165 students from Year 1 to Year 4 will present their drawings at their respective studios or at the Exhibition Hall in Block B03, Faculty of Built Environment. The project themes for the studios are as follow:
1. 1SBL at Level 1 Block 07: Landscape as Art by Dr Hasanuddin’s studio
2. 1SBL at Level 1 Block 07: Landscape for Fun Learning by Dr Sapura’s studio
3. 2SBL at Level 2 Block 05: Landscape for Correction Centers by Dr Jamil and Farid’s studio
4. 2SBL at Level 2 Block 05: FELDA Community Landscape by Dr Sarofil and Dr Sirima’s studio
5. 3SBL at Gallery Block 11: Landscape Resource Assessment and Planning for District of Kota Tinggi by Wan, Ahmad Long, Dr Hamidah and Mahanum’s studio
6. 4SBL at Exhibition Hall at Block 03: Final Comprehensive Projects presented by 31 students
All students and academics are invited to view the drawings from 9am to 4pm in the aforementioned venues.

SERAMAI 34 mahasiswa Sarjana Muda Ukur Bahan dan Sarjana Muda Sains Pembinaan, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor Bahru menyertai persidangan tahunan “International Surveying Conference for Undergraduates”, kelolaan Universiti Sains Malaysia, berlangsung di Thailand, baru-baru ini.
Persidangan tahunan anjuran bersama The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS, UK) dan Pertubuhan Juruukur Malaysia (ISM) itu bertujuan memperkukuhkan jaringan pelajar di rantai Asia.
Program bertemakan “Surveyors of the Future: The Challanges of Change” diharap menjadi pemangkin kepada usaha meningkatkan interaksi dan bertukar hasil penyelidikan dan pengalaman peserta.
Antara universiti yang menghantar penyertaan ialah Universiti Malaya, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Taylor’s, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Hong Kong), Chongqing University (China), Huazhong University of Science and Technology (China), Assumption University of Thailand dan Thammasat University (Thailand).
Sebanyak 18 kertas kerja dibentangkan pada lima sidang selari. Lima kertas kerja disampaikan wakil industri iaitu daripada Sr Datuk Mani Usilappan (RICS), Professor Mike Riley (Liverpool John Moores University, United Kingdom (UK)), Professor Roger Flanagan (University of Reading, UK), Sr Ahmad Suhaimi Abdul Majid (RICS) and Sr Dr Adi Irfan Che Ani (ISM).
Pada persidangan kali ini, UTM diwakili empat pelajar tahun akhir Sarjana Muda Ukur Bahan iaitu: Chong Yaw Fatt, Nur Farah Farhana Rasid, Tan Choon Boon dan Joanna Tay Yuan Ju.
Masing-masing membentangkan kertas kerja hasil projek penyelidikan prasiswazah mereka. UTM memenangi tiga daripada lima anugerah “Anugerah Pembentang Terbaik”.
Joanna diumumkan sebagai pemenang “Special Mention Paper Award” dengan kertas kerja bertajuk “Anticipating Issues Concerning Disputes in Statuotary Adjudication under Construction Industry Payment and Adjudication Act (CIPAA) in Malaysia”.
